In 1989, Milt Kobayashi made his first trip to Austin for a solo show with Gallery Shoal Creek. Not certain what to expect in Austin, he traveled by train from NYC to Chicago and on to Austin. Looking crumpled and weary from travel, he emerged from the train with a small suitcase and a still-wet painting tucked under each arm. It was the first time I met the artist, who would come to be a close friend. It was also the beginning of my career as a gallerist.
Over the course of thirty years, I have had the privilege to work with artists from across the United States, Canada, Mexico and France. Together we have worked to build their artistic careers, to expand their base of collectors, and to establish a reputation based on integrity. Stylistically, the gallery’s offerings have evolved with our regions’ population and life-style have shifted. From the early years of more traditional art, the gallery strategically moved to showcase more contemporary work, including installations and a strong appreciation for works on paper.
Now it is time to embark on a new path. In February, 2019, the gallery announced that our team will transition from brick-and-mortar gallery space to working with clients in an advisory role and providing consulting and curatorial services. We will continue to represent a select group of artists, including Milt Kobayashi.
